How to Test a Mouse Scroll Wheel

The most useful wheel test is repeatable: test one direction at a time, then compare the same mouse in a different browser or computer.

1. Run a browser test

Open the Scroll Wheel Test, select Up or Down, and roll steadily in the test area for five to ten seconds. Collect at least 20 events before judging the result.

2. Repeat and compare

Repeat the test in the other direction. Then try another browser. A problem that appears only in one application may not be caused by the mouse itself.

3. Check the connection

For wireless mice, charge or replace the battery and position the receiver nearby. For wired mice, reconnect the cable and try another port. Avoid making several changes at once; otherwise you will not know which helped.

4. Test another device

Try your mouse on another PC, or use a known-good mouse on the same PC. This is often the clearest way to distinguish mouse, receiver, and system settings.

5. Review settings and hardware

Check operating-system and manufacturer software settings. If the pattern follows the mouse, review the maker’s cleaning or support guidance before attempting a repair.

For a visual baseline, run the Scroll Wheel Test again after each meaningful change.
